Inside the DC Comics celebration of Asian superheroes and Asian creators with editor Jessica Chen

DC Comics celebrates their Asian heroes and drama creators this week in DC Fete of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration. The 100-page anthology has an each-star line-upfield of creators that include Mariko Tamaki, Greg Pak, Gene Luen Yang, Dustin Nguyen, Amy Chu, Francis Manapul, and more, with them functioning on heroes (and a couple of villains) so much as Cassandra Cain/Batgirl, Grace Choi, and Connor Hawke to new characters like Muck aroun Prince and Shifu Pigsy.
Before District of Columbia Fete of Heroes: The Continent Superhero Celebration hits comic book stands happening May 11, Newsarama had the casual to talk to editor Jessica Chen about what went into putting together this book. We discuss the importance of anthologies in the comic Word market, the process behind Chen pairing murder creators with certain characters, and we even discourse the origin of creating DC's newest fiber, Monkey around Prince.
Newsarama: Jessica, DC has been doing a good number of anthologies terminated the past couple of years. Why do you think they are life-or-death for the comic book securities industry and DC's securities industry in particular?
Jessica Chen: The coolest thing about anthologies, in my opinion, is that it's very inviting to new readers. And, as you know, ready for a keep company to sort of continue to share our foremost stories with people we want to agape busy others who might not be so tied to straight persistence.
Not exclusive that, but I in person love giving anthologies to my friends Eastern Samoa considerably because it's a quick, short 10 pages of a fun time - 20 minutes you find to cop and put IT back up and pick up and put it back down. So, I think it's identical inviting.
Nrama: When putting together an issue like DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration that collects so some different characters, voices, and aspects of Asian culture, what's the greatest take exception, and were at that place any characters you wanted to characteristic but couldn't?
Chen: I good-hearted of lucked come out, putting this together, because information technology's so much an important project to me and it's rattling personal because I am Asian. So, I was really lucky not to really have much of a challenge.
'Dress Code' preview
I very did make sure though I represented all of Asiatic culture - not just East Asian, simply Indian, Asian American, and people from all different backgrounds. Because DC has so many different Asian characters arsenic well - there were a couple I couldn't feature, but I did my best to chime in the best characters that people would want to understand.
Nrama: What went into determination the creators for this book?
Chen: DC is really composed about fully supporting our vision of the account book and who we want to hire. I put a tilt together of Asian American, Eastern creators and talent, and I just put the best talent unitedly with the unsurpassed characters, and that was just jolly much it. That's what goes bum all book we do actually. So, zip really different.
Nrama: Rear you speak about the decision-making process when it came to pairing creators, along with who got first dibs on heroes to employment for their stories?
Chen: This process of creating books is not so black and white. It's a big mixture of everything. Specifically, I knew I wished-for, e.g., Mariko Tamaki to write a Cassandra Cain Batgirl story. In my mind, that fair-and-square sounds awesome. So, I reached out to her specifically with like, "Terminate you write this story?" She was like, "Oh yeah."
'Sounds' trailer
For others, for example, like Alyssa Wong. I'm familiar with her writing, indeed I was like 'Here are some characters I feel like you'd constitute good writing.' And she chose Grace Choi to write.
It was a little bit of everything, but the virtually operative thing was that it was with great care fun for me because these are all sportsmanlike the best talent executable that I got to work on with happening this book to make this book something I'm really, really, really proud of. I can't hold off for you guys to read it.
Nrama: You birth several radical characters debuting in this, including Monkey Prince. How did Monkey Prince first emerge? Was it something Cistron and Bernard brought to you OR was information technology more of a discussion?
Chen: Growing up, my parents would tell me stories about Journey to the West and Monkey King. I remember thinking as a child, he was barely such a cool character because He has all these cool powers. So, in some respects, Monkey King was kind of my original superhero.
The Monkey Prince Hates Superheroes
And after being in DC Comics, I've always wanted to someways introduce Monkey around King American Samoa a superhero because his origin story sportsmanlike kind of writes itself. So, I've been kind of vocal about that around the hallways over the eld. Last year, editor in chief-in-chief Marie Javins reached out and was corresponding, "Hey, remember that love fancy that you kept talking about - go." So, I was like, "Really?"
With that sort of encouragement and support, I reached out to Gene Yang because he's done his research. He has dealt with researching Monkey King and as wel Scamp King means a lot to him biological process up. His mom also interpret him stories more or less Monkey Billie Jean King's adventures in Journey to the West.
So, immediately we started brainstorming. How fare we translate this Monkey Top executive character to DC? So, IT's very specifically Direct current in its DNA because at that place's been other renditions of Imp King in other media. I think we came up with something great. The missing objet d'art was Bernard Chang. I've talked to Bernard Chang ended the years and I also know that Monkey King means a lot to him growing rising. I know his dad used to recount him stories about Monkey around Baron.
I think what it is for the States Asian-Americans growing up with the story, information technology brings this class of a wonder of initiatory hearing about his adventures and his powers. And I really Bob Hope to kind of tincture this sort of wonder that we every last felt when we were jr. hearing these stories to a newer audience, a new Westerly audience, or maybe even another Asian American audiences, who may have the same kind of nostalgia and respect for this eccentric we all love.
And then, IT was kind of my thought, but me, Factor, and Bernard really created the origin and the essence of Monkey Prince jointly.
Monkey Prince designs
Nrama: Volition it be a long wait before fans watch incisively why the Monkey Prince hates superheroes, as the title of his story makes open? Wish we exist seeing more Monkey Monetary value following this special? If thus, seat you vamp where?
Chen: First of complete, Gene Yang is a genius. When he told me that was sledding to be the title of the story, I just now unsaved my mind. You'Ra going to find out real soon, as soon As next week on May 11, why Monkey Prince hates superheroes.
And rent me tell you, IT's almost too clever. I don't want to violate it. In terms of Monkey Prince, I reckon you're just going to have to tune in later this year to uncovering out if we see more of him.
Nrama: Monkey Prince is uppercase, merely can we discourse the greatness that is Shifu Pigsy. Are we going to get more backstory almost this character moving assumptive?
Chen: Shifu Pigsy is just so cool because for the first time of all, he canful fly with his ears, and in the story that you will learn helium Acts arsenic the keep system that every kid needs. He's same positive with the words he says. When you are getting out of script, He's also very kind to you rental you know, "Hey, this is not okay, but you can execute better."
This character is much like everyone's favorite Asian uncle. Leastways when I read this character, he reminds me of care one of my uncles. I tush't wait for you guys to read it and ascertain more about Shifu Pigsy and his personality. His designing generally is just awesome. Bernard Chang is a star. He nailed that in the prototypal assay.
Nrama: Some creators love short stories, and others find it really challenging to piece of work in just a fewer pages. Arsenic an editor in chief, what do you anticipate in a creator that lets you know they put up pull it forth in an anthology like this?
Subgenus Chen: If you can write a good 20-, 22-page story, you force out manage the same rather upshot in three pages. I haven't worked with a lot of short stories - like trinity pages, cinque pages, but for this anthology specifically, I desired to gain sure to feature article as many creators A I could as practically talent as I could. So, you will cost surprised that approximately of these 3-pagers, fivesome-pagers pack the most emotion sometimes.
'What's in the Box?' preview
For instance, the Dustin Nguyen story is only three pages, but I almost cried every time I show it. Same with the Lantern account, that one hit some sort of a shared validated experience as an Asian-American that you will get word when you guys take it. But there really is no difference with a short story and a long story. If you're a proficient talent, you can pull through mold the same either way.
Nrama: Did some of these shorts avail you witness creators for bigger stories Beaver State projects?
Chen: Let me think about this. I don't make out if I fanny say this so far, simply it's ambiguous enough. I am working with Alyssa Wong on something coming down the pedigree and I won't tell you what yet.
Nrama: You besides have Jeff Yang, a popular contributor to CNN and the Wall St. Journal - and also a large Asian American activist. How did you end upwardly having him come aboard to write the Koran's foreword?
Chen: I followed Jeff Yang for a long time now. He altered Secret Identities in 2009, the Asian superhero book, and that's actually what divine ME to do this anthology for DC when I read that more than 10 years past. I've since followed his journey and he is an activist, a long-familiar one in the Asiatic American community. He's very vocal about equality and justice for the Asian American community.
I knew with the timing of this book and what he means to me in terms of the creation of the specific anthology. I thinking that mix of superhero background and also his Asian American experience was the idealized compounding for a foreword.
And when atomic number 2 turned in his first off draft because it's coming at a time where we are facing opposed-Asian violence in the community of interests, I just cried and cried and cried version it because he also added very personal experiences and touches in in that respect that I rump relate to. I'm really hoping that other Asian Americans will pick up this book and experience that shared, lived experience to feel less alone straight now therein time of need.
As wel, Jeff Yang genuinely rules!
Nrama: Beyond the teasers born in this specific for future stories starring some of these characters, what throne you tell us about efforts DC is devising to put much AAPI stories out there in the near future, both from Asian creators and starring Continent characters?
Chen: Unrivaled of DC's values that really, in truth lines up with mine is the importance of reflecting the readers in our books. I cannot tell apar you how important, well you guys know, how important representation matters, and the more we can envision ourselves reflected in mainstream media, in front and nates - like me, the more we are closer to long-run changes in our lodge.
This book is a celebration of how far we've come, but it definitely won't be the past of how more we'll continue to push for representation. I contemptible, I for trustworthy will make sure IT happens because this is a very important subject to me. Hence why I inclined DC to patronage this book in the beginning. So yes, we will continue to do more, and I think that's awful.
'Festival of Heroes' preview
Nrama: With the unfortunate climb up in detest crimes against the Asian American and Peaceable Islander community, how important was it to present DC superheroes addressing this headway-on with Amy Chu and Marcio Takara's 'Festival of Heroes'?
Chen: So, so important leastways to me, and to the Asian community. Pine Tree State and Amy Chu talked about this. One of the coolest things, at to the lowest degree personally for me, virtually creating superhero content and comics is the power to take real-life issues and problems that everyday people deal thereupon we'Re unable to solve or we feel lost near fixing and so being able to have our superheroes cause that in a cathartic way.
We knew that in this very celebratory 100-page issue, we had to address this somehow because the Asiatic community is below distress. I've been under distress. When you interpret that write up, there's going to personify much of catharsis because we do have Katana, Bionic woman, Blue Mallet inject and help save the day, even though they aren't the real heroes in the end, and you'll see why erstwhile you read it.
Nrama: Are there currently plans for a larger purpose for Grace Choi in the proximo, and is split up of featuring her here to introduce her and others to new eyes?
Chen: I've never worked connected Deck Choi every bit a character before, but I've study her healthy up. It was a really big do by to be able to edit a level of hers.
'Family Dinner' prevue
I'm not certainly there are some plans with her down the line, simply because of my renewed love of her, I may take having her appear again here and in that respect. I'm non sure where yet, but you know, keep an eye out.
Nrama: Another smashing story is Hawke & Kong. Was this something pitched past the imaginative squad or from the editorial side, and what brawl you hope fans break of their team-functioning most?
Chen: Similar I said previously about how this is a mix of hoi polloi I reached out to for a specific character and who inclined me with WHO they longed-for to write.
I pitched Greg, "Maybe you should come a new Superman story that's really merriment. You have a truly fun sensibility of written material I think that will work." Then He came back locution, "I recollect it'd represent fun if I wrote a Connor Hawke history because personally, I am able to verbalise more or less the bi-racialness of IT because I am biracial as well."
I thought that was a smashing idea. Then I went, "wait a minute, how fun would it be if we did a team-up because that's something we've never seen ahead. And these deuce characters, Connor and Kenan are both indeed contrary in their personalities. Information technology will decidedly create great storytelling."
That's how that idea came to be. It was just a mixture of what everyone wanted. A perfect example of fair organic, creative collaboration.
I know as some a Connor Hawke fan and as a New Ubermensch fan myself, that if you're a fan of either reading the story you're leaving to have a lot of fun and you'Re going to joke a allot because it's so silly. Without saying too much, the last Page reminds me of just sitting at home with my aunties and my mom. So, I Bob Hope when you study that you feel that same sort of lived-in experience A well.
'Hawke & Kong' trailer
Nrama: Piggybacking off of the Connor Hawke treatment, will 2021 be the year of Connor Hawke in the DCU?
Chen: I don't know if it will be the year of Connor Hawke, only if you're a Connor Hawke lover, IT's a really good time to be one right now because he's also moving around in Robin.
He'll make up appearance therein anthology and we as wel have a Green Pointer 80th coming out. So, he'll have a story there as symptomless, which is a very good one. It's a very emotional story. I take it already.
We'Ra all genuinely making sure to take care of this graphic symbol because he hasn't appeared in a long time, and I know the fans love him a circle. The character is in dependable hands.
Nrama: How uttermost back into the DC archives did your research attend fat those character bios featured in the leger?
Chen: We did our best supported off of actually what me and Andrea Shea have grown upfield reading. Then we went back and read many more to double-check some information. We also checked with Benjamin LeClear, who is our archivist, for some missing info that we weren't sure about. That was really diverting. Kind of being able to go with stake to these characters and re-read their pedigree and appreciate it because in the 80 years our characters bear gone through thusly untold stuff and nonsense and they've evolved immensely. So, it was good to check in again with these characters.
Andrea is the associate editor on the volume. I haven't worked with Andrea in a long time. We were in the Super-group together for a little spot, but we only did Super Fair sex briefly together and she was still an assistant. So, this book was such a great chance to discipline in again and see how far she's come as an editor program. She has grown so much and we kept locution through this whole mental process: 'it's teamwork that makes the ambition work.' We worked together so symptomless, we'ray the ambition, then the team fair-minded full treatmen is what we kept saying. I love her. She was great. Shout out to her as fortunate.
'Uncommon Obstetrical delivery' preview
Nrama: I know at that place are a ton of spectacular stories, but what's one or a handful that truly surpass?
Chen: When I read the whole thing from presence to end recently sending it to the printing machine. This sentence recital it through because I've read every story at antithetic multiplication, I'm expiration to pick a preferent, and I in truth static couldn't. Obviously, I love the Monkey Prince story because we worked on that really erect, but they're meet all so good in different slipway.
It's literally like when you're eating at a festival operating room wish eating a really good meal, you need everything because everything balances each otherwise. Sorry for the really boring answer, but that's just the facts. I'm selfsame proud of his book. They'Re all large stories.
